You get coins now if you don't get an egg. But other than posting them for your neighbors to enjoy, they serve no functional purpose to you.
However.. You do need a Chicken Coop to collect eggs that your neighbors post, and you only have to fill the coop one time and just collect from it once a day, so I'd say it's worth doing to thank your neighbors.
Edit: They do serve a purpose to you now that the Eggcelent Ribbon has come out.. You get the Blue Ribbon after you "discover" 50 eggs
